26th Annual Spring Dutch Festival at Hofstra on Sunday,
May 3, 2009 at South Campus Playhouse Quad, Hofstra
University, 202 Hofstra Hall, Hempstead, NY 11549.
Outdoors, no rain date. The Dutch have had a long and
vibrant tradition as well as great respect for jazz music.
In the Netherlands jazz began around 1919. By the late 1920s
the Dutch jazz group The Ramblers performed with Coleman
Hawkins among others. Later Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington
would perform in the nation sparking further interest. Dutch
jazz musicians had reflected Americans before the war and
this continued to varying degrees until the late 1950s. In
the 1970s jazz gained acceptance in Rotterdam, Amsterdam,
and government funding. Since then many jazz musicians
choose the Netherlands as a place to study or settle. This
year, classical jazz music will fill the gardens and tents
on the south campus. Enjoy delicious Dutch fare, shop with
local vendors, stroll our beautiful gardens and pick up a

What Makes a Masterpiece - A Talk with Charles A. Riley
II, PhD on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 4:00PM at the Nassau
County Museum of Art, 1 Museum Drive, Roslyn Harbor, NY
11576. Charles A. Riley II, PhD., the dynamic art
historian and journalist, and the author of Color Codes, The
Jazz Age in France and many other books and articles,
investigates the connoisseurship and judgment that goes into
building a private art collection. When collectors encounter
a work of art, how do they begin to judge it as great or a
true masterpiece, or in the end, is time the only true judge
of greatness?
Dr. Riley, one of the museum's most popular and engaging
guest lecturers, presents a multimedia, multidisciplinary
examination of how the term masterpiece can and should be
used. He builds his talk around works currently on view at
the museum: Cezanne, Renoir, Picasso and others in Long
Island Collects and Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, George
Innes and others in Poetic Journey: Hudson River Paintings
from the Grey Collection. Admission is $20 (museum members,
$10) and includes admission to the museum. Reservations
required. For more information please call 516-484-9337. |

Party for the Dome's New Telescope on Saturday, May 16,
2009, 9:00PM-12:00AM (Rain Date: Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at
9:00PM) at the Custer Institute and Observatory, 1115 Main
Bayview Road, P.O. Box 1204, Southold, NY 11971. Come
meet the largest telescope in any public observatory on Long
Island - an 11' Newtonian reflector with a 25" mirror (the
old telescope in our dome had a 16" mirror)--and see the
universe as you have never seen it before. In October 2008,
Suffolk County Community College placed on loan at Custer
it's 25" Obsession telescope; we are grateful to Ted
Koukounas, Chair of Science and Math at SCCC, for making
this possible. Since the scope arrived, a team of skilled
Custerites have been working hard to retrofit it with a
tracking servo-mechanism, and to design and machine
revolutionary optics so observers can look through the
eyepiece without climbing a high ladder. Join us on this
night to have a truly amazing observing experience and to
celebrate not only the largest telescope in any public
observatory on Long Island, but possibly the only Dobsonian
telescope that has risen to such heights! Cost: Free, but
donations are always appreciated. For more information

Paragon Fine Art Festivals · Montauk Fine Arts Festival on
May 23-24-25, 2009 at The Plaza in the heart of Montauk, NY.
The Montauk Fine Arts Festivals returns this year on
Memorial Day weekend. This year, the show shifts its
location to the Green in the heart of Montauk, providing a
more attractive venue that is readily accessible to Montauk
Hwy and within a block of most downtown businesses and
restaurants. The event and parking are both free to the
public.
In its inaugural year (2008) the Montauk Fine Arts Festival
was awarded a ranking as the #55 top fine art show in the
country. This enhances both the show and Montauk's
reputations as a destination for fine arts. This event gives
patrons and visitors the opportunity to view and purchase
some of the most beautiful and creative artwork exhibited
anywhere in the United States. This is artwork produced by
the top artisans around the country and thus is artwork not
typically found in shows or galleries on Long Island or in
New York City. Come meet the artists where you can have the
unique opportunity to discuss their techniques and sources
of inspiration, adding value to your artwork purchase.
Patrons of the arts will find something for everyone among
the 95 artisans and millions of dollars of artwork exhibited
at the event. You will find artwork that covers a wide gamut
of media and prices, including original paintings and
sculpture and unique, one-of-a-kind clothing and jewelry.
Showcased will be works in clay, drawing/pastel,
clothing/fiber, furniture/wood, glass, jewelry, leather,
metal, mixed-media, painting, photography, print-making and
sculpture. For more information please call 631-421-1590 or
