Oil · Whales, Wells, What Next? Summer Exhibit 2009 at
the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum, 200 Main
Street, Sag Harbor, NY 11963.
Oil! We travel the globe in search of this natural resource
and wonder if something can be found to take its place?
Finding enough oil to sustain the nation’s energy needs is
one of our greatest challenges.
This exhibition is about oil - no, not only the oil we burn
today, but also the whale oil and other illuminants that we
burned a century ago – which show how market pressures,
foreign interests, and the scarcity of raw materials can
lead to innovation and problem-solving. This exhibition is
about the oil we use for lighting and other energy needs in
contemporary life. Since the 1700s, we’ve become less
dependent on natural daylight to illuminate our work, our
homes and leisure activities. But prior to the modern
electrical age, every means of producing artificial light
depended upon a substance that could be burned to produce a
flame. All illuminants came from animal, vegetable or
mineral sources: whales or hogs; olives or canola; and coal
gas or early petroleum distillates, such as kerosene. Along
the way, our quest for oil laid the ground work for powerful
global markets and industries.
With the invention of the internal combustion engine in the
late 19th century and its rapid assimilation for
transportation in the 20th, the petroleum market rose to
dominance in our total energy demand. Facing a similar
crisis to what the whaling industry faced more than one
hundred fifty years ago, the petroleum industry is now
experiencing its own set of challenges— with economic,
environmental and geopolitical concerns weighing heavily on
consumers’ minds. The question is: What new energy source,
or combination of sources, will fulfill the future energy
needs of our planet? As we exhaust our natural resources –
first the whales and then petroleum – we look to renewable
energy sources as the solution.

Real Dads Network Presents In Celebration of Black
Fathers' Week June 1-7, 2009 in Manhattan, Queens, Bronx and
Staten Island. The Real Dads Network (RDN) in
conjunction with Family Images, Proud Poppa Publications,
NYS Fatherhood Initiative, Million Fathers Club, Celebrating
Real Family Life, Renaissance E.M.S and Fathers Rights and
Resolution is hosting In Celebration of Black Fathers' Week.
This week-long extravaganza marks the continuation of the
Real Dads Network's Annual Black Fatherhood Summits started
back in 2005. This year's events begin Monday, June 1st and
end Sunday, June 7th, with events taking place in Manhattan
, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island . The purpose of this
historic event is to acknowledge Black Fathers who are
exemplary role models and positively impact our communities.
Originating as an outgrowth of the award-winning Real Dads -
Black Men On Fatherhood Documentary, Founder Derek Phillips
created the Real Dads Network as a result of the unequivocal
need for fathers to share their stories and experiences - a
centralized resource where Black men could go to get and
share information. RDN provides information and
opportunities to improve the lives of Black fathers through
its activities and events, thus promoting and portraying
positive Black fathers.
Earlier this year, the Real Dads Network hosted its second
annual Daddy Daughter Valentine's Dance, as a prelude to
this week-long event, stated Phillips, founder and executive
director. The overwhelming support and attendance that we
have received from past events leading up to In Celebration
shows me that RDN, a portal for positive fathers in action,
is not only working, it's making a real difference in the
lives of men and families! Real Dads throughout the nation
are standing strong, dispelling the negative stereotypes
that fathers are not active, emotionally involved,
supportive, or financially connected with their children in
or outside the home. Responsible fatherhood is indeed on the
move.
In Celebration of Black Fathers' Week is scheduled as
follows:
Monday, June 1, 2009 7:00PM-9:00PM at Abyssinian Baptist

McKay hosted by the Million Fathers Club. Producer/Director

in their children's lives, and most of all vocalize the fact
these fathers are truly accounted for and present.
