Oil · Whales, Wells, What Next? Summer Exhibit 2009 at
the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum, 200 Main
Street, Sag Harbor, NY 11963.
Oil! We travel the globe in search of this natural resource
and wonder if something can be found to take its place?
Finding enough oil to sustain the nation’s energy needs is
one of our greatest challenges.
This exhibition is about oil - no, not only the oil we burn
today, but also the whale oil and other illuminants that we
burned a century ago – which show how market pressures,
foreign interests, and the scarcity of raw materials can
lead to innovation and problem-solving. This exhibition is
about the oil we use for lighting and other energy needs in
contemporary life. Since the 1700s, we’ve become less
dependent on natural daylight to illuminate our work, our
homes and leisure activities. But prior to the modern
electrical age, every means of producing artificial light
depended upon a substance that could be burned to produce a
flame. All illuminants came from animal, vegetable or
mineral sources: whales or hogs; olives or canola; and coal
gas or early petroleum distillates, such as kerosene. Along
the way, our quest for oil laid the ground work for powerful
global markets and industries.
With the invention of the internal combustion engine in the
late 19th century and its rapid assimilation for
transportation in the 20th, the petroleum market rose to
dominance in our total energy demand. Facing a similar
crisis to what the whaling industry faced more than one
hundred fifty years ago, the petroleum industry is now
experiencing its own set of challenges— with economic,
environmental and geopolitical concerns weighing heavily on
consumers’ minds. The question is: What new energy source,
or combination of sources, will fulfill the future energy
needs of our planet? As we exhaust our natural resources –
first the whales and then petroleum – we look to renewable
energy sources as the solution.

Saturn Without Rings (Weather Permitting) on Saturday,
August 22, 2009, 9:30PM-12:00AM at the Custer Institute and
Observatory, 1115 Main Bayview Road, P.O. Box 1204,
Southold, NY 11971. From August 10-September 4, 2009
Saturn's rings will be nearly invisible, allowing better
viewing of its moons. Saturn will be setting a little while
before sunset, so not readily visible because of the
sunlight and the planet's position in the sky. Every 14-15
years, Saturn's orbit is such that its rings are tilted
edge-on to the Earth, making them barely visible and
allowing better viewing of the planet's moons. Optimal
viewing of Saturn in this state will occur between August
10-September 4, 2009. Because tonight Earth's own moon is
nearly new, we'll be able to view Saturn especially well. So
join us as we observe Saturn in rare form. Suggested
Donation: General Admission of $5 Adults, $3 Children under
14, Free for Members. For more information please call

Messier Marathon (Weather Permitting) on Saturday, August
29, 2009, 9:00PM-12:AM at the Custer Institute and
Observatory, 1115 Main Bayview Road, P.O. Box 1204,
Southold, NY 11971. Bring your own telescope or use ours
to find as many of the 110 deep sky Messier Objects as you
can! Spectators welcomed. What is a Messier Marathon? It's
based on a list of 110 objects "discovered" or compiled by
Charles Messier in the 1700s. While Messier worked hard to
discover comets, he compiled this list so that he could
avoid mistaking the non-comet objects he observed for the
new comets he was trying to find. Today, Messier Objects
form an introduction to deep sky observing for countless
amateur astronomers who challenge their skills by trying to
locate all 110 objects in one night. Tonight at Custer we'll
try our best to view as many Messier Objects as possible.
We'll have telescopes to borrow and share, but feel free to
bring your own. Spectators welcomed! Suggested Donation:
General admission of $5 Adults, $3 Children under 14, free
for Members. For more information please call 631-765-2626
or reply at
