Philip Jones Griffiths · Photographs From Five Decades On
The Frontlines Of History March 14 - April 4, 2009,
Briarcliffe College, 225 West Main Street, Patchogue, NY
11772. Gallery hours: Saturday and Sunday, 11:00AM-3:00PM;
Monday closed; Tuesday and Thursday, 2:00PM-8:00PM;
Wednesday and Friday, 2:00PM-4:00PM. The Patchogue Arts
Council, Briarcliffe College, and Magnum Photos are pleased
to sponsor an exhibition of legendary Magnum photographer
Philip Jones Griffiths' finest work from five decades on the
frontlines of history. When this exhibit first opened, the
New York Times commented, "For half a century, this
documentary photographer has been placing himself squarely
in harm's way to record military violence. His pictures of
the American war in Vietnam, which make up a substantial
part of this show, amount to one of the great tragic
portraits of their time and are required viewing in ours."
Tackling love, death, frivolity, politics and violence,
Griffiths' photographs comment ironically and profoundly on
virtually every aspect of human life. On the first
anniversary of his death, this exhibit traces his 50-year
journey from his native Wales to his most recent work in
post-war Viet Nam. Holly Gordon, one of the exhibit
curators, said, "His photographs are icons, giving that era
a face it will live with forever." PAC vice-president and
co-curator Karen Ferb said," His Vietnam photography
transcends the differences over the war here at home, and
his images draw conflicting emotions; the horror of war is
tempered with humility, terror with beauty, and despair with
hope. It is fitting that many of Griffiths' photographs
played a significant role in changing public attitudes about
the war. Many of the pictures included in this exhibit are
among the most unforgettable images of war ever made."
Members of the curatorial team also include Holly Gordon and
John Cino (PAC). Lou Commisso (Briarcliffe College) has
given valuable assistance. The exhibit is free and
open to the public. For more information please call Karen
Ferb at 631-758-2671, Holly Gordon at 631-835-0697 or reply

Facing Destiny Children in European Portraiture
(1500-1900) · Main Galleries · March 29, 2009 - May
25, 2009 at the Nassau County Museum of Art, 1
Museum Drive, Roslyn Harbor, NY 11576. Court
painters traditionally portrayed the privileged

emblems of office. This NCMA exhibition glimpses
personalities such as Maria Theresa of Austria or

surveys the conception of royalty and aristocracy in
art and offers a look at people who later became
important historic personages. The tour of Facing
Destiny is organized by the Fundacion Yannick and
Ben Jakober, Majorca, Spain; tour co-organized and

The Joy Luck Club on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 7:30PM at
Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Avenue, Huntington, NY. The
Long Island Arts Council of Freeport and Cinema Arts Centre
present a special film showing as part of The Big Read, Long
Island. Directed by Wayne Wang; Based on the best-selling
novel by Amy Tan. The Big Read is an initiative of the
National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading
to the center of American culture. Reading at Risk: A Survey
of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 NEA report,
identified a critical decline in reading for pleasure among
American adults. The Big Read addresses this issue by
bringing communities together to read, discuss, and
celebrate books and writers from American and world
literature. A great book combines enlightenment with
enchantment. It awakens our imagination and enlarges our
humanity. It can even offer harrowing insights that somehow
console and comfort us. For more information please call

Expansion, Black Holes, The Big Bang: How Do We Know
About These Things? on Saturdasy, April 25, 7:30PM-9:00PM at
the Custer Institute and Observatory, 1115 Main Bayview
Road, P.O. Box 1204, Southold, NY 11971. We know an
enormous amount about our Galaxy, other galaxies, and the
Universe as a whole. How can we know about these remote and
strange phenomena when all we have to work with is light (or
photons) collected by telescopes attached to (or very
nearby) the Earth? The answer is that our confidence arises
from an interaction of observations and theories; the most
successful explanations of cosmological phenomena do a much
better job of explaining the observations than any rival
explanation, and fit well with other physics results that
are well established in the laboratory. Along with
discussion of these matters, some of the basic observations
that are used to establish the properties of our quirky
Universe will be described. Presenter: David W. Hogg has
been on the faculty of the NY University Department of
Physics since 2001. His interests are in cosmology,
galaxies, and the making of fundamental measurements with
enormous astrophysical data sets. He is a member of the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey Collaboration and works with data
from the GALEX, Hubble, and Spitzer Space Telescopes, among
other facilities. Suggested Donation: $10 Members, $13
Non-Members, $5 Full-Time Students. For more information
