Philip Jones Griffiths · Photographs From Five Decades On
The Frontlines Of History March 14 - April 4, 2009,
Briarcliffe College, 225 West Main Street, Patchogue, NY
11772. Gallery hours: Saturday and Sunday, 11:00AM-3:00PM;
Monday closed; Tuesday and Thursday, 2:00PM-8:00PM;
Wednesday and Friday, 2:00PM-4:00PM. The Patchogue Arts
Council, Briarcliffe College, and Magnum Photos are pleased
to sponsor an exhibition of legendary Magnum photographer
Philip Jones Griffiths' finest work from five decades on the
frontlines of history. When this exhibit first opened, the
New York Times commented, "For half a century, this
documentary photographer has been placing himself squarely
in harm's way to record military violence. His pictures of
the American war in Vietnam, which make up a substantial
part of this show, amount to one of the great tragic
portraits of their time and are required viewing in ours."
Tackling love, death, frivolity, politics and violence,
Griffiths' photographs comment ironically and profoundly on
virtually every aspect of human life. On the first
anniversary of his death, this exhibit traces his 50-year
journey from his native Wales to his most recent work in
post-war Viet Nam. Holly Gordon, one of the exhibit
curators, said, "His photographs are icons, giving that era
a face it will live with forever." PAC vice-president and
co-curator Karen Ferb said," His Vietnam photography
transcends the differences over the war here at home, and
his images draw conflicting emotions; the horror of war is
tempered with humility, terror with beauty, and despair with
hope. It is fitting that many of Griffiths' photographs
played a significant role in changing public attitudes about
the war. Many of the pictures included in this exhibit are
among the most unforgettable images of war ever made."
Members of the curatorial team also include Holly Gordon and
John Cino (PAC). Lou Commisso (Briarcliffe College) has
given valuable assistance. For more information please call

Ongoing Event : Nutrition Class Group
Program Offered By Fitness Fusion 360
This program is an 8-week program. During
these 8 weeks, participants meet with a
Nutrition Manager Consultant three times -
one hour at the beginning of the program,
one hour during the program, and one hour at
the end of 12 weeks. Participants are asked
to keep a food log and an exercise log; they
learn how to analyze what they eat and
discover the number of calories they should
eat to achieve balance; they learn how to
budget their time and fit exercise into
their schedules; they learn ways to reduce
stress and why it is important to do so.
When participants have completed the 8
weeks, they will posses the tools needed to
be successful in long-term "fat" loss and
health. The program also includes three
individual consultations: The first
individual consultation is after the first
group meeting. This meeting concentrates on
individualizing the participants exercise
program; discussing the participant's goals
and objectives; and teaching the participant
how to use the diet analysis software. The
second individual consultation occurs after
the fourth group meeting. This consultation
focuses on how the participant is doing. The
third individual consultation occurs at week
12 (4 weeks after the group program). This
consultation concentrates on how the
participant is doing after the program
(repeat body composition measures, etc).

Facing Destiny Children in European Portraiture
(1500-1900) · Main Galleries · March 29, 2009 - May
25, 2009 at the Nassau County Museum of Art, 1
Museum Drive, Roslyn Harbor, NY 11576. Court
painters traditionally portrayed the privileged
world of royalty through their costume, jewelry and
emblems of office. This NCMA exhibition glimpses
personalities such as Maria Theresa of Austria or
Louis XIV of France when they were shown as
miniature adults, in a time before childhood was
seen as a phase in and of itself. The exhibition
surveys the conception of royalty and aristocracy in
art and offers a look at people who later became
important historic personages. The tour of Facing
Destiny is organized by the Fundacion Yannick and
Ben Jakober, Majorca, Spain; tour co-organized and
distributed by Exhibits Development Group, USA. For

Ridder MiniArtMuseum for Children · Beloved
Characters of Children's Literature Create An Art
Museum · January 18, 2009 - May 25, 2009
Tuesday-Sunday, 12:00PM-4:30PM at the Nassau County
Museum of Art, 1 Museum Drive, Roslyn Harbor, NY
11576. This interactive installation of works
from the Mary Ryan Gallery is designed by Paul
Orselli. Nassau County Museum of Art (NCMA) launches
the new Ridder MiniArtMuseum for Children with one
of the most delightful exhibitions ever designed to
intrigue young museum visitors. Babar’s Museum of
Art, featuring Laurent De Brunhoff’s illustrations,
opens on January 18, 2009 and remains on view
through May 25, 2009. This interactive installation
of works from the Mary Ryan Gallery is designed by
Paul Orselli. Babar's Museum of Art offers a very
engaging introduction to some of the world's
greatest art works - but with a real twist! These
artworks have been reinterpreted in a most unusual
way: all of the human subjects in these works by
Goya, Velázquez, Botticelli, Manet, Cezanne, Munch,
van Gogh, Rousseau, Picasso, Dali, Rodin, Degas,
Seurat and many others are seen as elephants. Likely
inspired by the conversion of Paris’ Gare d’Orsay
from a railroad station to a museum of art (Musée
d’Orsay), Queen Celeste and Babar decide that since
everyone’s is motoring these days rather than using
the train, they might as well use the station house
for a new museum to showcase the many works of art
they’ve collected. In Babar’s Museum of Art, the
adult elephants guide the young elephants through an
appreciation on different perspectives in art. For
more information please call 516-484-9337 fax at

"No Child Left Inside" on Thursday, March 12 from
8:00AM-5:00PM at the Islandia Marriot, Islandia, NY.
Experts from across the country and the region will gather
on Long Island for No Child Left Inside - a unique
interactive conference exploring the important role that
nature plays in healthy child development. The conference,
which is open to everyone in the community, will feature
some of the nation's most prominent thought leaders in the
areas of child development, education and the environment
and will pre sent innovative ways to encourage outdoor
learning and help children become better stewards of the
environment.
In addition to workshops, interactive exhibits and a variety
of clever contests, "No Child Left Inside" will feature
nationally-acclaimed author and journalist Richard Louv as a

Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, has

sphere. Other Keynote Speakers include Nancy Rosenow,
Executive Director of the Dimensions Educational Research
Foundation; John Rosenow, Founder and Chief Executive of the

The goal of this conference is to not only address how

their overall development, but to showcase ways that we can
help our children experience all that nature has to offer
whether in a formal program or right in their own backyards,
said Dana Friedman, a researcher, policy analyst and
community developer focusing on children and family issues,
and a widely-published national expert on the power of play
for young children. There are so many opportunities that
exist for outdoor learning, and we are thrilled to attract
some of the nation's top leaders in this area and showcase
the exciting all-natural outdoor classrooms that LINCK has
helped create over the past year on Long Island.
"No Child Left Inside" will also feature a unique Fairy
House competition (with local landscape architects competing
for the most creative Fairy House) and a number of special
raffle prizes, including a marimba and various wine
tasting/spa packages. In addition, the day will provide an
unprecedented opportunity for discussion and networking
among leaders in child development, education and the

CA.

Lecture : The History of the Telescope on Saturday, March
28, 2009, 7:30PM-9:00PM at the Custer Institute and
Observatory, 1115 Main Bayview Road, P.O. Box 1204,
Southold, NY 11971. Celebrate the 400th anniversary of
the telescope by learning about its creation and evolution,
from Galileo's first to the sophisticated designs of today
and what they enable us to see. Presenter: Edward Furey,
telescope historian. 2009 is the "International Year of
Astronomy" as it marks the 400th anniversary of the
telescope. What better way to celebrate than by reviewing
the history and evolution of the telescope? The discussion
will start with Galileo, walk forward to the open air
telescopes used by Huygens and others, Newton's invention of
the refractor, and the many contributions made by William
Herschel when he was moonlighting from his job as a court
musician. Mirrors grew larger and began to fail (as with
Lord Rosse's 72-inch in Ireland), then glass came to the
rescue and big refractors like the 40-inch at Yerkes
Observatory were born. Astronomical communities form in the
best dark sky areas, and next generation telescopes with
mirrors bigger than baseball infields arise. Presenter:
Edward Furey is a telescope historian and has been a member
of Custer for over 15 years. Suggested Donation: $10
Members, $13 Non-Members, $5 Full-Time Students. For more
information please call 631-765-2626 or reply at
