Ongoing Event : Nutrition Class Group
Program Offered By Fitness Fusion 360
This program is an 8-week program. During
these 8 weeks, participants meet with a
Nutrition Manager Consultant three times -
one hour at the beginning of the program,
one hour during the program, and one hour at
the end of 12 weeks. Participants are asked
to keep a food log and an exercise log; they
learn how to analyze what they eat and
discover the number of calories they should
eat to achieve balance; they learn how to
budget their time and fit exercise into
their schedules; they learn ways to reduce
stress and why it is important to do so.
When participants have completed the 8
weeks, they will posses the tools needed to
be successful in long-term "fat" loss and
health. The program also includes three
individual consultations: The first
individual consultation is after the first
group meeting. This meeting concentrates on
individualizing the participants exercise
program; discussing the participant's goals
and objectives; and teaching the participant
how to use the diet analysis software. The
second individual consultation occurs after
the fourth group meeting. This consultation
focuses on how the participant is doing. The
third individual consultation occurs at week
12 (4 weeks after the group program). This
consultation concentrates on how the
participant is doing after the program
(repeat body composition measures, etc).

Smithtown Township Arts Council presents RE Inspired :
Inspiring Ecological Awareness through Art July 20 - August
8, 2008 at the Mills Pond House Gallery, 660 Route 25A, St.
James, NY. The public is invited to an opening reception
to be held Sunday, July 20 from 2-4 pm. to meet exhibiting
artists and view their work. RE Inspired called for artists
to explore the relation between humankind and the
environment through work that transformed found objects into
art or used recycled materials to convey unique
environmental messages. The exhibit includes artwork that
attempts to reclaim waste and the destruction of nature in
the beauty of art. The gallery is free and open to the
public Monday-Friday 10:00AM-5:00PM and Saturday-Sunday
12:00PM-5:00PM.
The exhibition will include an Eco to Go room where gallery
visitors are invited to create their own eco-friendly art.
The theme of recycling through art extends to our Summer
Arts classes and camp where students will learn to take
throwaways and transform them into objects of renewed
meaning and magical beauty! Art through recycling will teach
children to see potential where others see only useless
junk. Classes and camps run throughout July and August and
registration is ongoing. Call 862-6575 for a brochure.
Some of the exhibiting artists:
• Mixed media / textile artist Diane Savona's textile art is
constructed almost entirely of salvaged materials. Her Road
Cloth series is constructed using clothing found on the
streets. The gloves, shirts and umbrellas are sewn to images
of the places they were found, stitching people and place
together.
• Long Island mixed-media assemblage artist Joseph
Eschenberg works mostly with mixed media and mixed surfaces.
He fuses together paint, photography and construction
material for many of his projects commonly using wood,
steel, copper, plastic, aluminum, nuts & bolts, photos and
found objects. Joe gets inspiration and materials for his
art "On the street"
• Long Island artist Richard Hoschler creates complex
three-dimensional mixed media assemblages involving a wide
range of concepts and materials. The artist associates his
work closely with unearthed artifacts or relics echoing an
industrialized nature, creating from all types of natural,
man made and found object media which span from wood, bark
and seed casings to machine parts, metal and digital
transparencies.
• New York's Max Liboiron is a mixed media artist and
scholar who works with ideas of nature what and who gets to
count as part of the discourse of "the natural". Max grew up
on a self-sustaining farm in northern Canada. Her
understanding of sustainable personal and environmental
relationships was formed early and has been influential in
both her early studies of university-level biology and her
more topical inquiries in art and visual culture. Max
strives "to represent alternative versions of the natural
world and the complex and inextricable relationships between
people, social history, and the local environment."

The Smithtown Township Arts Council's Third Annual Summer
Jazz Festival on Saturday, July 12, 2008 5:00PM-10:00PM in
the festival tent on the grounds of the Mills Pond House.
Featuring the legendary Bill Crow, Hendrik Meurkens and
Chico Mendoza. Admission $15 ($10 by Advance Reservation)
and $5 for students with ID. Headliners:
Legendary Bill Crow
Bill Crow has gained an international reputation as one of
the finest double bassists of the genre. During his nearly
six-decade career he is best known as a bassist but is also
an accomplished trumpeter, saxophonist, trombonist and
drummer. The list of musicians that Bill has worked for
reads like a virtual who's who in the history of the art
form: Gerry Mulligan, Benny Goodman, Marion McPartland,
Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington, Stan Getz and
many others. Bill is also an accomplished writer and has
authored two widely read books Jazz Anecdotes and from
Birdland to Broadway. Bill will be performing selections
that reflect some of the important musical relationships of
his vast career, interspersed with his recollections and
humorous anecdotes in what promises to be a delightful
musical experience. He will be performing with an all-star
quintet for this event which includes; percussionist Nick
Scheuble, Trumpeter Randy Sandke, Baritone and Alto
saxophonist Carl Maraghi, and guitarist James Chrillo.
Hendrik Meurkens Samba Jazz Quartet
Hendrik Meurkens, a virtuoso on both the chromatic harmonica
and the vibraphone, is considered the most important jazz
harmonica player since Toots Thielemans. Marcela Breton of
Jazz Times refers to Meurkens as "…one of the world's
leading exponents of the jazz harmonica." German-born but
now based in New York, Meurkens' recordings and performances
garner worldwide acclaim. Hendrik Meurkens' profound
involvement in both jazz and Brazilian music resulted in a
very personal and instantly recognizable version of Samba
jazz.
Latin Jazz Master Chico Mendoza
Grammy-nominated musician Chico Mendoza is a composer,
arranger, vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, and host of
the famed Manhattan Latin Jazz club "The Village Gate" as
well as a D.J. on WBGO "Jazz 88". Mendoza has perfomed at
such venues as Club Birdland, Madison Square Garden, The
Village Gate and was elected to the N.J. Music Hall of Fame
in 2004. Chico will lead a celebration of the musicians and
bandleaders of the "golden age" of Latin Jazz including
Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente and Cal Tjader. Under the
musical direction of percussionist, Nick Scheuble, this
"fiery" small group also includes Tito Puente's former
bassist, Mike Vinas. So get your dancing shoes on because as
Chico points out, "Here comes the rice and beans!".

Mr. Mouse Comes To The Mills Pond House For Tons Of Summer
Fun on Saturday, July 19, 2008 11:00AM-1:00PM at the at the
Mills Pond House Gallery, 660 Route 25A, St. James, NY. The Smithtown Township Arts Council is
pleased to celebrate summer with "The Mr. Mouse Show". The
performances, which include a puppet workshop, are geared
for children Pre-K through 3rd grade. Advance reservations
are required and space is limited to 45 per performance.
Tickets are $8.00 per person. "The Mr. Mouse Show" is a
participatory puppet performance workshop offering young
children a fun, positive experience with sing-along songs
and their own puppet project. Long Island puppeteer Katie
Polk believes her puppet art helps people develop their own
creativity. She builds all her own puppets, using items she
finds on beaches, in thrift stores and anywhere that may be
home to clothes pins, buttons, empty thread spools, odd
material and the like. Just about any item around may give
life to one of Katie's puppets. Combining sounds, textures,
colors and rhythms Katie uses her inventive imagination to
bring her puppet characters to life. She likes to
incorporate "fun, silliness, imagination and a sense of
wonder" into her puppets so "anyone, at any age can enjoy
themselves". Smithtown Township Arts Council is a 501 (c)
(3) not-for-profit organization. For more information and/or
to register please call STAC at 631.862.6575 or reply at

The Byrd Hoffman Watermill
Foundation & Artistic Director Robert Wilson Announce the
15th Annual Watermill Summer Benefit on Saturday, July 26,
2008 at 6:00PM at The Watermill Center, 39 Watermill Town
Road, Watermill, New York 11976. The evening will
include cocktails, silent and live auction hosted by star
auctioneer Simon de Pury, performances, art installations,
dinner, special guest performance and dancing. This gala
brings together the worlds of theater, art, fashion, design
and society for an evening that is as stimulating and edgy
as it is fun. The prolific German artist Jonathan Meese (b.
1970) will create a spectacular installation inside the
Watermill Center's main building, transforming Wilson's pure
design into a fantastic, ever-changing assemblage of cult,
kitsch, and historical relics. The Watermill Center was
founded in 1992 by theater and visual artist Robert Wilson
to foster research into the arts of the stage, to provide
young and emerging artists with a unique environment for
creation and exploration in theater and all its related art
forms, and to develop a strong global network transcending
age, experience, social, religious and cultural backgrounds.
Watermill supports projects that reflect the approach of its
founder Robert Wilson: mixing and integrating different
genres and art forms, breaking with traditional forms of
representation, developing democratic and cross-cultural
approaches. Watermill is about living and working together,
about creating your own environment and sharing this
experience with others. Watermill houses its founder's
extensive art collection for research, study and
inspiration. The whole of human experience and traditions in
all their diversity is the spring board for the avant-garde
of the future. Watermill offers a wide range of programs and
activities throughout the year. For the well-known
International Summer Program, Robert Wilson invites about 80
artists, young as well as established, for workshops
developing his work. From September to June, Watermill
provides space and time for 12 to 15 artists' residencies
selected by a high-profile committee of practitioners in the
arts and humanities. The residencies are complemented by
educational programs with schools and other institutions,
public events such as open rehearsals and lectures, tours of
the building and grounds, and seminars and symposia. For
