Hindu Organization of Long Island
The Hindu Organization of Long Island is a
community-based group dedicated to creating awareness,
promoting communication and providing resources about
Hindu Dharma throughout the Long Island community.
There are approximately one billion Hindus and about
three million of them live in America. In addition,
about 20 million Americans have adopted Hindu practices
such as yoga and meditation. Hindu religion is the third
largest religion in the world and has inspired some of
the greatest American writers and thinkers, including
Emerson, T. S. Eliot, Thoreau, and Whitman. Today, the
Hindus of America are a growing and vibrant community
consisting of scientists, scholars, doctors,
entrepreneurs and information technology specialists.
Yet, in America, there is a substantial lack of
awareness and misconceptions about the Hindus and Hindu
practices in general.
Hindu dharma, popularly known as Hinduism, is one of the
oldest religious traditions of the world. Hindus call
their tradition "Santana dharma" an ageless eternal law.
Hindu dharma includes many scriptures and claims no one
founder or seminal event. Of the innumerable scriptures,
the Vedas (bodies of knowledge) are the most revered and
are believed to have been revealed to learned sages.
There are four Vedas, of which the Rig Veda is the
oldest and the best known. Hindus also believe in the
law of Karma: the moral law of cause and effect. Hindu
thought embraces universality and acknowledges that all
paths lead to the same supreme being. To look within and
recognize the Absolute is the highest goal to a
practicing Hindu. The core of Hindu teaching is that all
beings are divine and furthermore that God is within any
form of existence. This principle is the basis of varied
forms of Hindu practices including the worship of
various deities, animals, plants and inanimate objects.
Hindus consider all forms of worship -- physical, verbal
and mental - to be valid. The main purpose of life is to
seek direct personal experience of God.

About Hinduism
Hinduism (known as Hindu Dharma in modern Indian
languages is a religious tradition that originated in
the Indian subcontinent. In contemporary usage Hinduism
is also sometimes referred to as Sanatana Dharma, a
Sanskrit phrase meaning "eternal law". Hinduism, many of
whose origins can be traced to the ancient Vedic
civilization, is the world's oldest extant religion. A
conglomerate of diverse beliefs and traditions, Hinduism
has no single founder. It is also the world's third
largest religion following Christianity and Islam, with
approximately a billion adherents, of whom about 905
million live in India and Nepal. Other countries with
large Hindu populations include Bangladesh, Sri Lanka,
Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius,
Fiji, Suriname, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. Hinduism
contains a vast body of scriptures. Divided as revealed
and remembered and developed over millennia, these
scriptures expound on theology, philosophy and
mythology, providing spiritual insights and guidance on
the practice of dharma (religious living). In the
orthodox view, among such texts, the Vedas and the
Upanishads are the foremost in authority, importance and
antiquity. Other major scriptures include the Tantras,
the sectarian Agamas, the Pura as and the epics
Mahabharata and Ramaya. The Bhagavad Gita, a treatise
excerpted from the Mahabharata, is sometimes called a
summary of the spiritual teachings of the Vedas.
Hinduism differs from
Christianity and other Western religions in that it does
not have a single founder, a specific theological
system, a single system of morality, or a central
religious organization. It consists of "thousands of
different religious groups that have evolved in India
since 1500 BCE. Hinduism is generally regarded as the
world's oldest organized religion. Most forms of
Hinduism are henotheistic religions. They recognize a
single deity, and view other Gods and Goddesses as
manifestations or aspects of that supreme God.
Henotheistic and polytheistic religions have
traditionally been among the world's most religiously
tolerant faiths. However, until recently, a Hindu
nationalistic political party controlled the government
of India. The linkage of religion, the national
government, and nationalism led to a degeneration of the
separation of church and state in India. This, in turn,
has decreased the level of religious tolerance in that
country. The escalation of anti-Christian violence was
one manifestation of this linkage. With the recent
change in government, the level of violence will
diminish. Om or Aum is a sacred syllable used to
represent Brahman, the impersonal Absolute of Hinduism -
omnipotent, omnipresent, and the source of all manifest
existence. It symbolizes both the unmanifest and
manifest aspects of God.
