Museum of the
Village of Rockville Centre
Located in The Historic Victorian Phillips House
Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre
commemorates the history of Rockville
Centre. Named in honor of Samuel Phillips,
who lived in the house with his wife,
Marinda and son and daughter, this is a sea
captain's house built about 1882.
Basically Victorian homes of their day, sea
captains' houses were built for retired sea
captains by ships' carpenters. At one time,
there were dozens of these homes in
Rockville Centre, each unique to the family
residing there. Some unusual features
include the built-in drawers and shelves in
the dining room and the parents' bedroom
upstairs. The house is of balloon
construction, a major architectural
improvement of the day.
We offer tours of the Museum. For formal
tours at a set time or for groups, please
make a reservation in advance.
Our Archivist is available to assist you by
appointment. Since every project is unique,
and our staff are all volunteer, please
remember not every request can be answered
immediately. Some searches may have costs
associated with them. These are disclosed
before any research is begun.
