The
Hicksville Gregory Museum
Long Island Earth Science Center
The mission of The Hicksville Gregory Museum
Long Island Earth Science Center to create
an awareness of and an interest in earth
science, natural history and local history
through: the collection preservation and
exhibition of specimens and artifacts;
publications and educational programs. The
Gregory museum in Hicksville NY, Long Island
offers earth science, minerals, fossils,
antique dolls, fossil birds, Chinese
fossils, Mesozoic fossil birds, dinosaur
eggs.
The Hicksville Gregory Museum evolved from
the collections of local school
administrator, Dr. Gardiner E. Gregory.
Fascinated by butterflies and moths, he had
amassed thousands of specimens. When a
changing science curriculum emphasized the
study of rocks and minerals, he developed
another passion. Granted a temporary charter
for the museum in 1963, he and his wife Anne
opened their Cottage Boulevard home to
schoolchildren from Hicksville and
surrounding communities. The Gregory moved
to its permanent home, the Heitz Place
Courthouse, in 1973 after three years of
extensive renovation of the building by
hundreds of volunteers.
The Hicksville Gregory Museum offers
educational programs in the Earth Sciences
for all age levels. In addition, tours of
the museum and programs are offered to
senior citizen, scout and other interested
groups. For more about those programs please
call the museum. The following pages give an
overview of what we offer. Our staff will
also create custom programs on different
aspects of geology at your request.
Located in an 1895 former courthouse, the
museum is on the National Register of
Historic Places. It holds Long Island's
largest rock and mineral collection, more
than 5,000 butterfly and moth specimens, a
shell exhibit and fossil collection, a
Confuciusornis sanctus, a flying dinosaur
bird specimen from the Xixian Formation in
China, dinosaur egg exhibit with a pair of
