Description: |
Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island Meeting: A Look at New York's Lost Synagogues at Mid-Island Y-JCC in Plainview, Nassau County, Long Island, New York.
Speaker Ellen Levitt will take us on a visual tour of synagogues on the Lower East Side, in the Bronx, in Brooklyn's Brownsville, East New York, and Bedford-Stuyvesant, and in other areas of New York City which once had large and thriving Jewish communities. She will discuss the shuls' architectural features, the demographics of the communities they served, and how the buildings are used today. A veteran teacher and lifelong resident of Brooklyn, Ellen has been researching and photographing former synagogues since 1999. She is the author of three books about the Lost Synagogues of Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn, as well as Walking Manhattan and dozens of articles. This meeting includes announcements and a tip of the month. Genealogy experts available at 1:30PM. |
