Kinahora Jewish Superstitions Old and New Lecture by Writer Lecturer Carol Cott Gross by the Commack Jewish Center Sisterhood at CJC in Commack, New York. Come join the Commack Jewish Center Sisterhood for a fun lecture on Jewish superstitions.
Do you wear Evil Eye jewelry? Do you knock wood? Tie a red bow on a crib? Sen your grandchild smear her name on her birthday cake? This fun program explains why the ancient concept of The Evil Eye is still going strong on Long Island.
We will trace the evolution of "cycle of life" Jewish and secular superstitions: Menstruation, engagement, weddings, pregnancy, birth, birthdays, moving, travel, etc. Using Jewish folk and family lore, fairy tales and Jewish style cruses we will see how superstitions are coping devices and links to our shared past. Any why females are more superstitious than males. Plus, we will explore new superstitions invented by today's kids. Bring along a family superstition to discuss. Participants will get take home tips.
"Kinahora" is a Yiddish for "without curse" evil eye for protection against those who wish you harm.
Commack Jewish Center is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue and Religious School located in Commack, NY, on the North Shore of Long Island. It began with a few Jewish families coming together in 1957, was 'born' in 1958, and incorporated in June of 1959. Our first home was a storefront in the Mayfair Shopping Center followed by a house on the corner of Walter and Shirley Courts. As we moved into the '60's, the need for a real building became obvious. |
