The community is invited to come join the fun on Sunday, March 11 when North Shore Synagogue will celebrate Purim with an exciting carnival and Open House.
Purim, the happiest of all Jewish holidays, is an historical holiday based on a series of events that took place in Biblical times. A simplified version: King Ahasuerus married a woman named Esther, not knowing that she was Jewish. Haman, one of his ministers, was angered by Queen Esther's uncle Mordecai, who had refused to kneel before the King, as it is forbidden by Jewish law to bow to another person. Haman devised a plan to kill all the Jews in the Kingdom, but Queen Esther persuaded the king to stop the plot. Haman was hung and the Jewish people were saved. Purim is a celebration of the Jewish people being saved from destruction by the bravery of Queen Esther.
Traditional Purim celebrations include festive carnivals, reading the story of Purim from the Book of Esther at home or in the synagogue, and making lots of noise each time the name of Haman is heard loud enough so that the name cannot be heard. Costumes and masks are a big part of the holiday and everyone eats "Hamentashen" fruit filled pastries shaped in a triangle just like Haman's hat.
North Shore Synagogue is a Reform congregation and a member of the Union for Reform Judaism. The mission of North Shore Synagogue is to join with our members in building a community where the practice of Reform Judaism enriches and uplifts our lives with understanding, warmth, friendship and meaning. |
