Long Island Cares - The Harry Chapin Food Bank
Long Island's Premier Food Bank And Hunger Assistance Organization
Long Island Cares is Long Island's First Food Bank and one of the region's most comprehensive hunger action organizations working to end hunger on Long Island since 1980. Founded in 1980 by the late singer, songwriter and social activist, Harry Chapin, our organization provides nutritional food and support services for a network of more than 540 community-based member agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, child care programs, disability organizations, veterans services and more. While the annual distribution of over 6 million pounds of nutritious food is the heart of Long Island Cares' operations, we function as more than just a food bank.
The Mission of Long Island Cares is to bring together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island. Long Island Cares provides emergency food where and when it is needed, sponsors programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and educates the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
Long Island Cares relies on the generosity and strong support of the individuals, corporations, and foundations that make up our community. We are deeply grateful to the many who join with us and support our commitment to strengthen and secure the future of our community by providing a healthier and more meaningful life to those among us in need. Long Island Cares provides a broad array of programs including food drives, hunger education, job training, kids cafes, mobile outreach vans, new paths to achievement, school tools, and a food pantry. As you navigate your way through our website you will have numerous opportunities to learn more about our organization and its mission. You will learn a great deal about hunger on Long Island and have an opportunity to help us in our fight against hunger. Our vision is a hunger-free Long Island.
A food bank is a charitable organization that solicits, receives, inventories, stores and distributes food and grocery products from various sources. A food bank may purchase food from funds provided by government agencies or charitable grants, or it may receive food donated by manufacturers, retailers, or individuals. The food bank is responsible for ensuring that all food and grocery products that it receives and distributes comply with industry and regulatory standards. These products are distributed to charitable human service agencies, such as food pantries, which provide the products directly to clients.
