Description: |
The Long Island Museum will present Long Island in Bloom, a major exhibition on the art of flowers, from March to July, 2012. The museum will draw on its permanent collection, supplemented by flower paintings on loan from other institutions and individuals.
Long Island in Bloom will focus on three groups of Long Island painters whose work is a celebration of nature. This survey of floral Long Island will begin in the 19th century with Stony Brook resident artist William Sidney Mount and his family, who frequently painted floral subjects. In the mid-20th century, a group of painters centered in Southampton and Hampton Bays experimented with subjects that included flowers set against backgrounds of beaches and sand dunes, and abstract floral shapes. More recently, nationally known painters in the Hamptons, including Robert Dash, Cornelia Foss and Bill Durham, also concentrated on flowers in their artwork, ranging from realistic to impressionistic to the boldly expressionistic. Each of these works is an exuberant testament to the power of flowers.
The exhibition will be timed to coincide with Long Island’s blooming season, when nature is at its peak in the wild as well as in cultivated gardens.
The exhibit will be complemented by a variety of public and education programs for audiences that include garden enthusiasts, children, families and seniors. Examples include demonstrations and lectures on flowers and gardening, art workshops in watercolors and drawing, and a Juried Art Show entitled Long Island, Natural Wonder.
The Long Island Museum is Long Island's largest privately supported museum, and is accredited by the American Association of Museums for excellence in exhibitions and programs. In 2006 the Long Island Museum joined a small group of cultural institutions nationwide as a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection..
The Long Island Museum is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages with an understanding and enjoyment of American art, history and carriages as expressed through the heritage of Long Island and its diverse communities.
The museum is open Friday and Saturday from 10:00AM-5:00PM and Sunday from 12:00PM-5:00PM. |
