Description: |
Abdol-Hossein Sardari The "Iranian Schindler" (Diplomat and Rescuer of Jews during the Holocaust) at The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (Welwyn Preserve).
An unprecedented program in the Long Island region with distinguished scholar Dr. Fariborz Mokhtari, of the National Defense University in Washington DC, and author of In the Lion's Shadow: The Iranian Schindler and His Homeland in the Second World War (The History Press, 2011) will take place at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County. The program will honor Abdol-Hossein Sardari, the Iranian Envoy stationed in Paris, who rescued thousands of Jews from the Nazis in parallel fashion to the famous rescue efforts of Oskar Schindler in Poland. Participants will include relatives of Mr. Sardari and children of Jews that he rescued.
In addition, there will be an exhibition featuring a replica of the Cyrus Cylinder from the British Museum. This clay cylinder is inscribed in Babylonian cuneiform with an account by Cyrus, king of Persia (559-530 BC) of his conquest of Babylon in 539 BC and capture of Nabonidus, the last Babylonian king. This cylinder has sometimes been described as the 'first charter of human rights.' Although previous kings began their reigns with declarations of reforms as early as the third millennium BC, the Cyrus Cylinder is one of the few existing documents which record a charter of tolerance.
The exhibition will also include textiles and artifacts relating to Persian life in Iran and Central Asia (from the mid-1800's through the early 1900's). Some items of note from the Great Neck community include a 150-year old traditional Mashadi wedding dress from Turkmenistan. The exhibition will run from October 14 - December 2012.
The program begins at 1:30 pm on Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center, 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove. A tea reception and book signing will follow. Dietary laws will be observed. |
