Description: |
Tom Edmonds, Executive Director of the Southampton Historical Museum, will give a talk about Captain George White (1819-1893) who lead a fearless crusade against Southampton's greedy would-be developers of resorts, casinos, race tracks and canning factories. This forgotten man was directly responsible for preventing Southampton from turning into another Atlantic City. His twenty years of fevered legal battles were closely followed in the New York Times, and resulted in the overturning of a corrupt local government and the preservation of Southampton’s natural resources for local farmers and fishermen - and for all of us to enjoy today. |
