Description: |
Romantic composer Robert Schumann may be more familiar today than his wife Clara, however their 27-year marriage, begun in 1840, offers a window into the complexities of a unique 19th Century dual-career relationship. One of Europe's leading concert pianists, Clara was often the breadwinner for their eight children, as Robert's struggles with mental illness increased. The session will examine the public and private lives of the Schumanns', focusing on some of Robert's Op. 25 songs (a wedding present for Clara); selections from Kinderscenen (Scenes from Childhood), Op. 15, for the piano; and the famous Quintet for Piano and Strings in E flat Major, Op.44--which has historical importance for the combination of piano and string quartet. A beautiful, celebrated, and often tempestuous love affair coupled with an exciting exploration of some of the most famous and romantic 19th Century music. |
