Evi Blakie author of "Magda's Daughter" will speak about her life as a hidden child during the Holocaust. The program, which is sponsored by the Sisterhood of the Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead, will take place on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 2:00PM at 711 Dogwood Avenue in West Hempstead.
Evi Blaikie's book "Magda's Daughter" subtitled "A Hidden Child's Journey Home" depicts the life she lived during the holocaust as well as her life following the war. Evi Blaikie was born in Paris to Hungarian, Jewish parents about a year before the Nazis invaded France. Her father was forced to go underground and was never heard from again. Her mother, Madga, sent her young daughter to Hungary, just before being arrested by the Nazis and put into a forced labor camp. In order to survive the third Reich many Jewish children were placed in hiding and forced to keep their true identity a secret. Evi was less than three years old when she was brought to Budapest using a false identity to protect her life. She stayed with various family members in Hungary until her mother escaped from the camp and returned about 2 years later. The experience of being separated from her parents at a young age and being moved from one location to another to protect her took a devastating, emotional toll on her for the rest of her life.
Evi Blaikie co-founded the Hungarian Hidden Children Group which still meets once a month. Please join us for this very special program. For additional information call Fran Welner at 516-481-7448.
About Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead
Founded in 1951 to meet the religious needs of some 750 families, mostly Jewish, who set up new homes in our area (once devoted to potato farming), the JCCWH enrolled some 650 families as members and set up a full program of Conservative Religious Services, including a Religious School, and at once became a focal point for religious and community activities.
Today, more than 200 families join together as a sacred community, in prayer, in song, in Sisterhood, Men's Club, Chavurah groups, educational programs, cultural and social activities, and in joyous celebration of life's events.
Our Community
Enjoy the difference a warm, caring, 'heimish' community makes! We are proud to be a multi-generational 'extended family' for our members. Together we share life's joys and sorrows, finding comfort and reassurance in being part of a sacred community.
Our Worship
Come celebrate Shabbat and holidays in spirited, egalitarian prayer and song! You'll find a refreshing attitude which favors broad congregational involvement in our services. |
