Description: |
Temple Beth-El of Great Neck Jewish High Holy Day 2013 / 5774 Services at Temple Beth-El of Great Neck in Great Neck, Long Island, New York.
The High Holy Days bring the temple community together, as our Rabbis and Cantor lead and inspire us, in prayer and music. We hold services and programs for all ages.
Selichot
Selichot, which means forgiveness, is also the name of the late night service that takes place on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah. Our Selichot program begins at 9:00 p.m. with Havdalah and refreshments. Our rabbis will then lead us in a discussion appropriate to the season. The evening culminates with our beautiful Selichot service. Hearing again the penetrating High Holy Days melodies and the sounding of the shofar, the Selichot service helps us to prepare for the Days of Awe. As part of the service, we engage in the universal Jewish custom of removing from the Scrolls of Torah the covers customarily worn throughout the year and adorning them with their distinguished High Holy Days mantles.

As a community we will observe this ancient practice of throwing breadcrumbs into a moving body of water as a symbol of our repentance and a sign of making a clean start for the new year. Tashlikh is a beautiful Rosh Hashanah tradition, which provides an opportunity for self-reflection and a chance for congregants to gather in an informal setting. Our Tashlikh service begins at 3:45PM at Steppingstone Park. It lasts less than a half hour.

We hold a Yizkor Service on the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at 11:00AM in Temple Beth-El's section in the old portion of Beth Moses Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island.
