North Shore Synagogue and Midway Jewish Center Two Congregations and Three Cantors: An Evening of Song and Reflection at North Shore Synagogue in Syosset, Long Island, New York.
The public is invited to join the congregations of North Shore Synagogue and Midway Jewish Center as the community gathers for an evening of song and prayer in celebration of Selichot on Saturday, August 31st at North Shore Synagogue in Syosset.
Selichot is the name of the prayers to be recited that evening and lends its name to the evening's worship service which generally takes place on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah, the holiday that ushers in the Jewish New Year. Selichot prayers ask for forgiveness and are part of an ancient tradition of beginning the New Year with a fresh start. The community will begin Selichot in the quiet of the night to focus attention on the tasks of preparing for the New Year abandoning unproductive and hurtful behaviors and committing to positive affirmations and healing for us as individuals and the world around us.
The Selichot evening will begin at 8:30PM with a Pre-Selichot performance featuring Cantors Magda Fishman and Rich Pilatsky from North Shore Synagogue with Cantor Adam Frei from Midway Jewish Center. Refreshments will be served following the performance. Selichot services will start at 10:30PM and will be led by Rabbis Perry Raphael Rank and Joel Levenson from Midway Jewish Center and Rabbis Deborah K. Bravo and Jaimee B. Shalhevet from North Shore Synagogue as well as Cantors Fishman, Pilatsky and Frei.
