Inocente
(2012) Directed by Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine. United States. 40 minutes. Winner of the 2013 Academy Award for Best Short Documentary, Inocente is the intensely personal and vibrant coming of age story of a young artist's determination to overcome the bleakness of her surroundings. Inocente is a 15 year old undocumented immigrant who refuses to give up her dream of becoming an artist despite nine years of shuffling through San Diego's overcrowded homeless shelters. Told entirely in her own words, the story unfolds as she decides to take control of her destiny. Her talent as a painter has been noticed, and if she can create a body of work in time, she has an opportunity to mount her first art show. Inocente is a timeless story about the transformative power of art and a timely snapshot of the new face of homelessness in America children.
Tanta Agua
(2013) Directed by Ana Guevara and Leticia Jorge. Uruguay. Spanish with English subtitles. 102 minutes. What could be worse than being 14 and on vacation with your father, stuck indoors during a seemingly endless rainstorm? Alberto and his two children, Lucia and Federico, set off to a hot springs resort for a short vacation. Alberto, who doesn't see his kids much since the divorce, refuses to allow anything to ruin his plans. But the springs are closed until further notice due to heavy rains, and Lucia's adolescent rebellion clashes against her father's enthusiastic efforts for family quality time. When she meets friends her age, equally bored at the rained-out resort, Lucia's vacation starts looking up. But flings can be fleeting, and it's her father's reliable insistence they spend time together that proves to be the most meaningful part of their unexpectedly enjoyable getaway.
Salvador Allende
(2004) Directed by Patricio Guzman. Chile. In English, French, Spanish, with English subtitles. 100 minutes. Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzman is one of cinema's most acclaimed documentarians. With Salvador Allende, he turns to the life of one of the twentieth century's most inspiring and controversial leaders, whose overthrow by an American-backed military destroyed not only his dream of Chilean socialism, but all those he inspired. On November 4, 1970, Salvador Allende was elected president of Chile and committed himself to the socialist transformation of his country. Three years later, he was deposed by a right-wing coup led by Augusto Pinochet and committed suicide before being taken prisoner. His country faced two decades of military-led dictatorship and his followers faced repression, exile, or death. "Salvador Allende marked my life" says Guzman in this heartfelt work. "I will never forget".
Mambo Loco
Formed in 2005, Mambo Loco has become synonymous with the classic music of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican origin. During the past several years the group has brought the best of "Old School" Latin and Latin Jazz music to the Long Island area. Lead vocalist and conguero Larry Belford has been performing since he was a child growing up on Long Island and has performed with many of the best Latin groups in New York. His fiery drumming and vocals are the focal point of the band. Since joining the group full time in 2007, Alfredo Gonzalez, trombone, violin, percussion, and vocals, has added a certain "Sabor Latino" that only a person of his native Puerto Rican heritage can convey. Bill Smith, piano, melodica, and vocals, brings to each performance a varied palate of musical styles. Wayne Burgess, bass and vocals, like Smith a Berklee alumnus, anchors the group with many years of live performance experience.
