Smithtown ABC's focuses on the history of schools and schooling in the Smithtown area since the 1700s. Much of the material is drawn from the museum's own collections. Highlights include mid 19th century children's clothing, student assignment books and writing samples from the 18th century and many artifacts and photographs which reveal how learning and going to school have changed for youngsters over the past 300 years.
About Smithtown Historical Society
The Smithtown Historical Society is committed to the preservation, restoration, and interpretation of Long Island's heritage for the education and enjoyment of the public. Through research, education, conservation, and community activities, we seek to strengthen the ties to our rich heritage. Founded in 1955, the Society is chartered by the Board of Regents to preserve historic sites, structures and materials and to provide programs, which will promote interest in history and research. Merger with the Smithtown Branch Preservation Association in 1982 enlarged both scope and membership. We count on the support of all who share our concerns for the preservation of the past. Membership is open to all.
Commitment to Education: Responding to the need for a greater understanding of Long Island history, the Society has developed six outstanding educational programs for elementary school children. Available to all Long Island schools, the programs are designed to implement New York State Curriculum requirements for local history instruction. During the past year the Society has hosted over 8,000 children. Many elementary teachers enroll their classes in the programs every year.
About Caleb Smith House
This early 18th Century House was built in two stages reaching completion in 1819. In 1955 the dwelling was moved from its original Commack location on Jericho Turnpike to its present site in Smithtown. Former Headquarters for the Smithtown Historical Society, this building now serves as the Society's exhibition hall displaying a large collection of decorative arts, textiles, costumes and documents. |
