Date: June 22, 2013
Time: 10:00 AM
Location: Hofstra University Mack Student Center

Description: Faith Against Hate: A Day of Learning - Council Parliament of the World's Religions at Hofstra University Mack Student Center in Hempstead, Long Island, New York. Sponsored by The Interfaith Center of New York and Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center of Nassau County.

Hate is rising in our country. The number of active hate groups in the U.S. topped 1,000 for the first time (Southern Poverty Law Center). The number of armed militias have doubled (Time)
2.5 million more Americans bought guns for the first time last year (FBI). President Obama is receiving 400 percent more death threats than President Bush did (Secret Service).

It is time that the power of Interfaith works to mediate the elements of fear, anger, and hate into positive human relationships.

The Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions and The Islamic Center of Long Island welcome all to the nation's premiere Faith Against Hate public program:

Faith Against Hate A Day of Learning
Faiths Against Hate is convening those concerned from across communities of faith, spirit, and civic institutions to join and take steps beyond solidarity toward greater action in the struggle overcoming our culture of hate. Front line experts from each Faiths Against Hate co-sponsoring organization across Long Island and New York City will deliver comprehensive, reality-driven trainings on hate crime, influencing law, engaging youth, building interfaith community, changing minds and media, and more. Come concerned, leave prepared.

This free intensive day of training is an opportunity for community leaders of faith and advocacy-minded institutions to join the concerned citizenry of New York in stopping the rising tide of hate in the United States.

Complimentary lunch and refreshments will be served to all participants as part of this free program. We hope you will:

Some Background
New York and Long Island's most experienced and strategic faith and community leaders are coming together with the world's oldest and largest interfaith organization to spend one day learning from each other and sharing the most effective and meaningful approaches to understand, confront, and defeat hate. To influence our culture, we must operate from the notion that hate is born of anger, which is rooted in fear. We must act on the belief that fear, hate, and anger can be transformed into positive neighborly relationships across all peace-loving groups. That's why the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions is partnering in effort to join the groups facing this problem head on. Through powerful bonds of interfaith community, we have the best chances of mediating hate through our communities and in relationships with guiding institutions.
