Description: |
English Manor Luncheon - Celebrating The English Tradition of Highclere Castle at the Old Westbury Gardens in Old Westbury, New York.
We are excited to be presenting the third annual hat luncheon at Old Westbury Gardens. This luncheon has become a wonderful tradition and a vital funding source for Children's Programs at the Gardens. This year's theme is an English Manor Luncheon. We are privileged to have Joan Hope MacNaughton as the 2012 Hat Luncheon Chairman. We hope to encourage guests to explore Westbury House, upstairs and downstairs. It was built by its owner Jay Phipps to be an English Country House to persuade his English bride Margarita Grace to marry him.

Carol Wallace Hamlin, the co-author of "To Marry an English Lord" will present an entertaining slide lecture about the phenomenon of American heiresses who married English aristocrats in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. She discusses Consuelo Vanderbilt and Jennie Jerome who, became Lady Randolph Churchill, and was the mother of Winston Churchill. This material has always been fascinating and entertaining, but now that Cora Grantham of Downton Abbey is part of the national consciousness, it's even more relevant, because Cora Grantham was one of these American heiresses. Her dollar dowry is what allows Downton Abbey to flourish and "To Marry an English Lord" was the book Julian Fellowes was reading when he was approached to write the mini-series.
Champagne lunch, silent auction, live auction. Garden party attire and hats encouraged.
