Description: |
47th Annual Brentwood Puerto Rican Hispanic Day Parade Event by Teatro Yerbabruja on 5th Avenue in Brentwood, Long Island, New York.
After more than four decades of honoring the tradition of the annual Puerto Rican Hispanic Day Parade in Brentwood, Adelante (founder and organizer of the parade) decided to cancel the event due to lack of funding. In response to this reality, our organization, Teatro Yerbabruja, is joining forces with the rest of the community in an effort to save the parade.
About Teatro Yerbabruja
Our mission is to advance cultural understanding within the diverse Long Island communities that we serve by using the theatrical and other performing and visual arts as tools to promote constructive social change and to provide opportunities for emerging and established artists. Margarita Espada is the founder and executive-artistic director of Teatro Yerbabruja, an organization formerly based in Puerto Rico and now based on Long Island, that uses the arts as a tool for social change. In 2009, the organization produced a community-based performance piece called "What Killed Marcelo Lucero?" based on the November 2008 hate crime killing of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero. |
