Dark Banquet: Blood and the Curious Lives of Blood Feeding Creatures presented by the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon at the Cold Spring Harbor Library, Long Island, New York.
For centuries, blood feeders have inhabited our nightmares and horror stories, as well as the most shadowy realm of our scientific knowledge. Tonight, Dr. Bill Schutt, author of the critically acclaimed book "Dark Banquet, Blood and the Curious Lives of Blood Feeding Creatures" and an authority on vampire bats, takes us on a dark but entertaining voyage into the world of some of its strangest creatures – the sanguivores, or animals that feed on blood. In mapping out the world of blood- feeding creatures, we will learn about their natural history and behavior - and especially their unique (and some might say, gruesome) feeding habits! In addition, Bill will also look at the history of man's association with blood - from the bible, to early transfusions (sheep were popular blood donors), to the widespread practice of blood-letting, which was as commonly prescribed as aspirin is today.
Tonight's program promises to be interesting, informative and if his April 2012 program on bats was any indication, highly entertaining.
Bill Schutt earned his Master's degree in biology from Geneseo State College. He then attended Cornell, receiving his Ph.D in zoology. After graduating in 1995, Bill taught for three years at Bloomfield College in New Jersey while simultaneously working on a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the American Museum of Natural History with bat expert Nancy Simmons. In 1998, Bill accepted a faculty position at Southampton College (Long Island University). In 2005, he transferred to his undergraduate alma mater, LIU Post, where he is currently a Professor of Biology (teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Evolution, Mammalogy, Vertebrate Paleontology, and Vertebrate Anatomy). Additionally, Bill has strong ties to the American Museum of Natural History, where he is a Research Associate in the Department of Mammalogy. He is the author of the critically acclaimed book "Dark Banquet: Blood and the Curious Lives of Blood-Feeding Creatures" and is currently working on: "You Are What You Eat: A Natural (and Unnatural) History of Cannibalism.” |
