The Long Island Regional Economic Development Council recently awarded a $500,000 grant to conduct a feasibility study and pilot project for the construction and operation of an Agriculture Enterprise Facility. A committee comprised of representatives from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, Long Island Farm Bureau, Long Island Wine Council, Peconic Land Trust and the farming community is coordinating project planning and implementation.
The project has several potential components including:
- Cooling, storage and distribution facility for raw and processed agricultural products
- Meat processing facility
- Processing agricultural products (value added)
- Storage for Agricultural supplies
With limited funding, the committee needs input from the local farming community to determine what type of facility would meet the needs and priorities of the industry.
All vegetable and fruit growers/wine producers/animal producers are welcome and encouraged to attend.
