aura Cottingham, an artist, critic, writer and curator, discusses the rich lode of scenes of New York in the collection of the New Britain Museum of American Art, among them an Impressionist’s view of Union Square, a home scene on Manhattan’s 57th Street, an en plein air depiction of a creek near Kingston, and a Long Island domestic scene. Cottingham has taught art criticism at Cooper Union, The School of Visual Arts and Columbia University. Laura Cottingham is a contemporary artist, art critic and curator. Well-known on the international art scene, she has appeared before art audiences in London, Paris, Cologne, Berlin, Maastricht, Utrecht, Copenhagen, Vienna, Stockholm and elsewhere. She has served as a guest curator at major art museums in Europe; most recently, she juried the Swedish contemporary art annual. Her writings on art have been translated into several languages, including Russian and Chinese. In New York City, where she lives, she has taught art criticism at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art; The School of Visual Arts; and Columbia University. Her last book, Fear Eats the Soul, considers the artistic accomplishments of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. She is currently working on a series of blue paintings. |
