The Art of Wine and Vines - Wine and Vines Art Gallery Exhibit - Long Island at the Quogue Library, Long Island, New York.
For the first time, the Art Gallery Committee has invited local artists to create works in differing media that portray the beauty of the farms and vineyards on the East End of Long Island.
This exhibit will feature the following East End artists:
Marla Milne, Anne St. John, Keith Mantell, Aubrey Grainger, Jake Rajs, Betsy McMahon, Lynn Crowe, Lovejoy Duryea, Liz Duerschmidt, Priscilla Ruffin, Liz Platé, Anita Kusick, Susan Plunket, Miranda Gatewood, Susan D'Alessio, Patricia Feiler, Joan Larson and Lisha Terry.
The East End is known for agriculture and was considered the breadbasket of New York City. For many years potatoes and cauliflower were important crops for Long Island farmers; however, the rising price of land forced many farmers out of the business.
In 1973 Louisa and Alex Hargrave planted the first vineyard on Long Island's North Fork. Though experts believed the local climate would not support vinifera vines (the wine grape species of Europe), the Hargraves proved them wrong and other wine growers followed. Now Long Island is home to 3,000 acres under vine, nearly 50 wine producers and approximately 1.5 million tourists visit the region each year.
Come and view the artists' interpretation of the "The Art of Wine and Vines" and savor the flavor of a variety of wines from our local vineyards. Select artwork is available for purchase and would make an excellent gift for the holidays.
Refreshments generously donated by Lieb and Bedell Cellars, Palmer Vineyards and Stakey's Pumpkin Farm.
Art Gallery Committee Members Betsy McMahon, Liz Plate, Jean Duffy and Doreen Ceglia are co-chairs of this event. The exhibit will be on view from November 2-28, 2012. |
