Description: |
Amadeo Modigliani's (1884-1920) fame as a tormented genius, doomed to an early death is almost as great as that of Vincent Van Gogh. Addicted to drugs and drink, he was renowned even amongst the unconventional circle of Picasso, for outrageous behavior. Nevertheless, in his short lifetime, he produced a significant body of work in three media (painting, sculpture, and drawing)--a rare feat even for the greatest artists. He is especially known for his poignant portraits of women and children and of such notables as Soutine, Diego Rivera, Picasso, Juan Gris, Jean Cocteau, and others. He was also famed for his voluptuous nudes reminiscent of the sensual Venetian Renaissance tradition. His 28 stone sculptures are also dazzling examples of this medium. Furthermore, Modigliani reinvigorated the Western artistic tradition via his multi-cultural embrace of non-Western sources of inspiration: African, Egyptian, Cycladic (Crete), Oceanic and Far Eastern art, among many other influences. He died a prince of vagabonds and Bohemians, penniless, desperately ill and tragically only becoming popular and highly valued after death. |
