Description: |
Long Island: A Migratory Motel with John L. Turner presented by the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon at the Cold Spring Harbor Library, Long Island, New York.
Long Island provides permanent, year-round habitat for many species of wildlife such as chipmunks, deer, raccoons, black-capped chickadees and downy woodpeckers. What is less appreciated is the role the Island plays in providing essential habitat for a wide variety of migratory species. This lecture introduces you to the fascinating stories of two dozen species that migrate through or to Long Island.
John Turner is the president of Alula Birding & Natural History Tours as well as former Conservation Co-Chair of the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society. He also formerly held the position of adjunct professor of ornithology at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at SUNY-Stony. Prior to retiring, he was the Director of the Division of Environmental Protection for the Town of Brookhaven. He has also served as Director of Conservation Programs for the Long Island Chapters of The Nature Conservancy and worked for Defenders of Wildlife. Turner is a cofounder of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society and served on its board for 26 years. He is also the author of the book, "Exploring the Other Island: A Seasonal Guide to Nature on Long Island" as well as a children's book on the water cycle entitled "Waylon's Wandering Waterdrop." |
