Simon Fashion Show presented by Winthrop - For Design
Wars Competition at Roosevelt Field - Long Island Movers and
Shakers Pair with Nassau Community College Students on
Friday, October 14, 2011 at 1:00PM at Roosevelt Field®,
Garden City, NY 11530. Design competition preludes Simon
Fashion Now™ a free, dynamic celebration of style for Long
Island fashionistas. Simon Fashion Now®, a free and dynamic
celebration of style at all price points, presented locally
by Winthrop University Hospital, will bring red-carpet
glamour by Long Island students to the runway at Roosevelt
Field when the mall hosts Design Wars, an interactive design
competition between Nassau Community College’s fashion
design students. Eight fashion design students enrolled in
Nassau Community College’s Fashion Design Program have been
paired up with a dynamic Long Island woman, a “mover and
shaker,” and challenged with creating a custom red-carpet
look that is inspired by the model’s choice of celebrity
they wish to emulate, from Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jennifer
Aniston to Sophia Loren. Among the participating notable
Long Island women are Fair Media Council’s Jaci Clement;
Peri Appollo from WKJY's Steve and Peri Show; singer Mary
Lamont, the Long Island Queen of Country; and Miss Long
Island 2012 Jessica Pinckney. The students must also cater
the design to their model's specific taste and personal
style.
Under the guidance of Nassau Community College Professor
Sharyne Wolfe, the students have sketched designs for their
"client" as part of this project, which began in September.
Further into the process, they draft a pattern for their
design, construct the garment and create the ensemble while
staying on a budget of $100 for materials, provided by
Roosevelt Field. The designs will be revealed at 1:00PM for
the first time and modeled on the Simon Fashion Now runway
by the incredible women who inspired the looks. Newsday.com
Senior Multi-Media Producer Meredith Daniels will serve as
event emcee, and the designs will be judged by JCPenney
Store Manager James Skopkowski, Freelance Fashion
Contributor Jennifer Kim, Bare Escentuals Boutique Manager
Rosemary Dietrich and Long Island Press Fashion Writer Licia
Avelar. The winning student will receive a $500 American
Express® Simon Giftcard®*, with a runner-up receiving a $250
American Express® Simon Giftcard®*, exposure on Roosevelt
Field’s Simon Fashion Now runway, announcement of their name
on Roosevelt Field's Facebook page and a real-life
experience to take on their career path. Shoppers are
encouraged to be front and center and cheer on the students
and the Long Island women in the North Court. For more
